How to collect Volume Shadow Copy Service (Volume Snapshot Service) log files


Use the free Acronis VSS Doctor tool to diagnose and fix the most common problems with VSS. If it didn't help, follow instructions below.

In order to troubleshoot the issues with the VSS snapshots, you may be asked to collect VSS logs. There are different levels of VSS logs that might be required for issue troubleshooting.

  • VSSADMIN output

Windows includes a command called vssadmin that can be used to manage current volume shadow copy backups and all installed shadow copy writers and providers. Using this utility a general VSS service status log may be collected to troubleshoot basic VSS issues.

  • VSS debug tracing log

It is possible to enable additional logging for the VSS service. This log is required for advanced VSS troubleshooting.

  • VSS Requestor log

This is a VSS Requestor log required for advanced troubleshooting of VSS issues in relation to SnapAPI service.


Follow the basic troubleshooting section and collect vssadmin utility output if not advised additionally by Acronis Customer Central representative.

(!) No VSS writers are listed when you run vssadmin list writers on Windows Server 2008 - see Microsoft KB Article 2009533.

(!) Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 in Windows Small Business Server 2003 does not have the writer enabled by default. See Microsoft KB Article 838183.
