tibX

Description

Archive 12 format is a main archive type for Acronis Backup 12.5. It is used to back up any data, including mobile data, applications, application-aware backup, MacOS, Oracle DB etc

It is a single .tibx file for each backup chain: Full or Differential + all Incremental files that depend on it

Metadata is stored inside the archive, checksummed and verified (there is no separate xml file for metadata).

Introduction

Acronis True Image 2020 introduced a new backup format - .tibx, which is even more reliable and convenient. The .tibx format is used for disk backups created to internal drives, external drives, network storage.

One of the main changes in this new backup format is that the .tibx format saves full and differential backup versions as separate files, while incremental backup versions are automatically merged into their base full backups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When does Acronis True Image 2020/2021 create backups in new format?
A: See Acronis True Image 2020: tib and tibx backup format usage

Introduction

Recent versions of Acronis True Image have brought a new backup format: tibx. The format of local backups can be easily figured out by looking at the backup file's name extension, whether it is the new .tibx or older .tib.

If the backup is stored in Acronis Cloud, the product's user interface does not display the used format anywhere and does not allow to change it. This article explains how to find out the format of backup, stored in Acronis Cloud.

In the list of backups, you see one or more archives that have not user-fiendly names.

If you attempt to browse this archive, e.g. check the recovery points, you receive an error message:

Failed to resolve the backup.
Failed to open the backup archive by the ID.

Symptoms

User wants to manually delete a .tib/.tibx backup archive in Explorer, or to modify Acronis configuration files, e.g. to adjust settings of alerts or change default ports for services.

Operation fails with “Access denied” error:

Folder access denied
You need permission to perform this action

Cause

Access to Acronis files may be denied by Acronis Self-Protection.

Symptoms

  1. You save backups to an unmanaged location using Version 12 archive format
  2. Two or more backup archives have the same "Date modified" value

Scenario

You have a backup archive (TIBX) and operations with it (either continuing to back up to it, or restoring/extracting data from it) fail with errors that the archive is corrupted.

Goal: You want to run diagnosis (validate) the archive to see what is damaged in it and to what extent, and, if possible, you want to repair the archive (at least partially).

Symptoms

  • You are using the storage abgw-lhr3-arp1.acronis.com on EU1 DC
  • Starting from 24th of March, backups have been failing with “Operation failed due to a temporary issue in the cloud storage”
  • In the error details, you see the messages “Object is invalid” and the archive name in the “path” field:
