kernel panic

Symptoms

Acronis True Image installed on macOS 11 Big Sur Beta causes kernel panic during boot that leads to cyclic reboots.

Kernel panic is a situation when Mac encounters a system error and keeps restarting unexpectedly with a warning message "You need to restart your computer".

Cause

Lack of compatibility due to a major shift in macOS architecture.

Symptoms

When recovering your Mac via Acronis rescue media, you have erased the system volume on the target disk by using Disk Utility prior to recovering the system.

Recovery completes without errors, but the system does not boot after restore.

Cause

Issue in the product.

Solution

This issue has been fixed in Acronis True Image 2021 Build 35810. Please update to the latest build.

As a workaround for earlier versions, erase the entire disk and format it as APFS before recovering your Mac:

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on the product version:

  • Acronis Cyber Backup 12.5 builds 16180, 16318, 16327, 16342, 16343 contain build 0.7.127 –  SnapAPI module will not compile on kernel 5.8 and later
  • Acronis Cyber Protect 15 builds 24426, 24508, 24515 and later contain SnapAPI build 0.7.133 which imminently leads to kernel crash and the following error:

cannot execute binary file: Exec format error
when trying to execute any binary file.
