Symptoms

You have a disk-level backup (of entire machine, individual disks or volumes) and try to restore this backup.

Restore fails with:
| Error 0x2160008: Format/Resize error.
| line: 0x70c3c482200869e7
| file: f:\so\cr_et\da_api\context_disk.cpp:572
| function: context::CopyDisk
| $module: tstfdisk_vsa64_s_1
|
| error 0x70025: Index is corrupted.
| line: 0xa7795193c91882b4
| file: f:\so\cr_et\resizer\ntfs\fs_ntfs_filter.cpp:999
| function: resizer::NTFSProcessor::DeleteFilesFromIndex
| $module: tstfdisk_vsa64_s_1

Cause

These errors indicates that the file system in the image is corrupted and the file system errors interfere with volume mapping ("resizing") during recovery.

Solution

To resolve this issue:

  1. Acronis Cyber Backup 12.5: if you are using Build 11010 or later, use regular Linux-based bootable media

    Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud: if you are using Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud 7.7 or later, use regular Linux-based bootable media.

    If you are using an older build  - download this custom bootable media.

  2. Boot your machine in BIOS mode(called legacy mode on some systems) using this bootable media.
  3. On the boot menu stage, press F11 (or Ctrl+F11) and add kernel option DISABLE_VOLUMES_RESIZE=1:
    Make sure you are entering DISABLE_VOLUMES_RESIZE=1

  4. Recover disks as you would normally do. For help, see this guide.
  5. If you cannot boot from the restored disk:
    • Perform disk check with the Check Disk Tool:
      1. Attach the restored disk to another machine.
      2. Run the Disk Check Tool by issuing in the Command Prompt:
        chkdsk /f
    • Apply Acronis Universal Restore:
      1. Boot the machine with the bootable media.
      2. Select Apply Universal Restore and follow on-screen instructions.
