List of new features and enhancements in Acronis Backup.

Simplified licensing

  • The Universal Restore feature is included in all Acronis Backup and Acronis Backup Advanced licenses. The Deduplication feature is included in all Acronis Backup Advanced licenses. The Universal Restore and Deduplication add-on licenses are deprecated.
  • Agent for Exchange, Agent for SQL, and Agent for Active Directory can be installed by using any Acronis Backup Advanced license for virtual environments. No additional licenses are required.

Windows 8/8.1, Windows Server 2012/2012R2, Windows 10 support

  • Install Agent for Windows, Agent for SQL (single-pass), and management components in Windows 8/8.1 and Windows Server 2012/2012R2.
  • Boot a machine that uses UEFI Secure Boot into bootable media based on WinPE 4.0 or Linux-based bootable media.
  • Back up and recover (without resizing) volumes that have the ReFS file system or any data on these volumes.
  • Back up storage spaces and recover them to the original location, to different storage spaces or as ordinary disks.
  • Back up and recover (at a disk level) volumes where the Data Deduplication feature is enabled.
  • Support for Windows MultiPoint Server 2012 and Windows Storage Server 2012 R2.
  • Acronis Backup Advanced for Hyper-V can be installed in Windows 8, 8.1 (x64) with Hyper-V.
  • Support of Windows 10.

Cloud backup

  • The Acronis Backup & Recovery Online service is renamed to Acronis Cloud Backup.
  • Cloud backup is now available for machines running Linux.
  • Volume Subscriptions introduced
  • It is possible to specify a cloud subscription registration code during local installation of Acronis Backup in Windows. The subscription is registered automatically if the machine is connected to the Internet.
  • A registered subscription for Server or for PC is activated automatically when the first backup to cloud starts, if all subscriptions available in your account are the same type and have the same storage quota.

Single-pass backup of Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft SharePoint and Active Directory data

  • Use a single solution and a single backup plan for both disaster recovery and data protection purposes.
  • Back up a machine and recover disks, volumes, files, MS SQL databases, SharePoint Databases, Active Directory.
  • Support of MS SQL Server 2005, 2008, 2008R2, 2012.
  • Recover MS SQL databases directly to a running MS SQL Server instance, or extract them as files onto a file system.
  • Truncate MS SQL Server logs after a backup.
  • Support of MS SharePoint 2007, 2010 and 2013.
  • Recovery of MS SharePoint data to a folder or to a SharePoint farm with automatic data location
  • Recover the entire domain controller without a risk of a USN rollback.
  • Extract Microsoft Active Directory data from a backup and replace the corrupted data in a few simple steps.
  • Use any backup destination including Acronis Cloud.

Backup and recovery of Microsoft Exchange Server data

  • Support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2010
    Acronis Backup Advanced supports Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 as well as Microsoft Exchange Server 2003/2007.
  • Support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2013
    Acronis Backup Advanced supports Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 on disk-level backup and disk-level restore as well as granular restore to .pst files.

  • Express full backup method
    This method is based on monitoring changes of the Exchange database files. Once the initial full backup is taken, all subsequent backups will only back up changes to this database without needing to read the entire database file. Combining this method with the data deduplication functionality makes it possible to back up large databases of 1TB or more during business hours and even over WANs.   • Exchange clustering support
    Acronis Backup Advanced supports SCC, CCR and DAG cluster configurations. You can choose to back up database replicas rather than active databases for minimal production impact. If the Mailbox role is moved to another server due to a switchover or a failover, the software will track all relocations of the data and safely back it up.   • Continuous Data Protection
    By using Continuous Data Protection, you can revert Exchange data to any point in time. If the most recent transaction log file survived, you can revert Exchange data to the point of failure. See also Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5: Continuous Data Protection.
  • Backup destinations
    The backups can be saved to any type of storage supported by Acronis Backup Advanced, except for Acronis Online Backup Storage, Acronis Secure Zone, and removable media.
  • Enhanced granular recovery
    Browse Exchange Server either database or mailbox backups and recover single or multiple mailboxes or just a specific e-mails. You can also recover calendar items, notes, tasks and journal entries. See also Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5: Enhanced Granular Recovery
  • New recovery destinations
    Besides being able to recover data to a live Exchange server, you can recover
    • Exchange databases to a regular disk folders.
    • E-mails and mailboxes to .pst files.


  • Support for VMware vSphere 5.0, 5.1 , 5.5, 6.0
    Recover a machine to a virtual machine stored on a datastore cluster that has the Storage Distributed Resource Scheduler (SDRS) feature turned on.
  • Support for Hyper-V 3.0
    Including Generation 2 virtual machines.
  • Back up and recover from inside a guest system: Oracle VM Server 3.0, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.1
  • Support for UEFI-based virtual machines
    Recover a machine using Unified Extensible Hardware Interface (UEFI) to a VMware ESXi 5.0 host; the new virtual machine’s firmware will be UEFI.
  • Support for VM templates
    Back up and recover virtual machine templates the same way as normal ESX(i) virtual machines.
  • Bare-metal recovery of Microsoft Hyper-V hosts
    Back up an entire Hyper-V host along with its virtual machines without interrupting its normal operation. You can then recover the host to the same or a different hardware.
  • Enhanced support for Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization environments
    Back up and recover virtual machines running in RHEV environment. Migrate physical machines to the RHEV environment (P2V); and migrate a virtual machine from a different virtualization platform to the RHEV platform (V2V).
  • Support for Citrix XenServer 6.5, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.4, 3.5, and Oracle VM Server 3.3 (by installing an agent into a guest system).


Support for various types of storage

  • Acronis Online Backup Storage (only for machines running Windows and virtual machines)
    The Grandfather-Father-Son and Tower of Hanoi backup schemes are now available when backing up to Acronis Online Backup Storage.
    Replicating or moving backups to Acronis Online Backup Storage.
  • RDX and USB flash drives
    Enhanced support of removable devices.
  • Tapes (only for advanced editions) 
    File-level recovery is possible from disk backups stored on tapes. This feature can be enabled or disabled by setting the corresponding tape management option.
    USB-connected tape devices are fully supported.
    The Tape names column is added to the Archive view for vaults located on tapes. Thus, you can see on which tapes a backup is stored.
    It is possible to move several tapes to other slots at once. This enables taking several tapes out of a tape device simultaneously.
  • Enhanced NFS shares support
    An NFS share can be selected as backup source by both Agent for Windows and Linux-based components.
    A centralized vault can be created on an NFS share. Backup to NFS can be performed by Agent for Linux, Agent for VMware (Virtual Appliance), or Linux-based bootable media.

Centralized management

  • The "Back up now" feature is now available on the management server
    Configure and run immediate one-time backups on the management server.
  • Vault selection in Data catalog
    You can select the vault to recover the data from, if the backed up data has multiple replicas stored on more than one vault.
  • Customizable location of the catalog database
    When creating a managed vault, you can specify the location of the catalog database.
  • Complete disablement of backup cataloging on a managed machine, storage node, or the management server.
  • Multiple online backup subscription activation
    Using the management server, you can activate online backup subscriptions on several machines at once.
  • A centralized vault can be created on an NFS share.
    Backup to NFS can be performed by Agent for Linux, Agent for VMware (Virtual Appliance), or Linux-based bootable media.


  • 3 GB of RAM per 1 TB of unique data are required, instead of 16 GB.
  • Faster server-side deduplication.
  • Faster compacting of the data store.


  • Support for Linux kernel up to version 3.12, 3.14, 3.15, 3.16, 3.18, 4.0, 4.1

  • New Linux kernel version (3.8) in Linux-based bootable media. The new kernel makes for better hardware support.
