The differential and incremental backups are automatically deleted only when the full backup is deleted

Acronis True Image for Mac uses an "always incremental" archive meaning there is physically one file in the archive location while the incremental changes are written to this file directly as opposed to older formats where incremental changes were written into individual files in the backup location.

After erasing a tape or moving to a free pool in the product, an empty archive is kept there as a container for future backups

Instructions on finding backups in an offline managed vault

In diesem Artikel wird die Kompatibilität von Backup-Archiven mit verschiedenen Versionen von Acronis-Backup-Software beschrieben.

Die folgende Tabelle enthält eine Übersicht zur Kompatibilität:

The operation fails because the archive meta information is damaged or missing. Run vault validation to fix the issue

You receive the following error when browsing recovery points for a backup:

Failed to resolve the backup. The specified file does not exist.

If you check the backup location, the first volume of the archive is missing.

E.g. a complete set of archive volumes looks like this

[Machine Name]-[Plan ID]-[Unique ID]A.tibx

[Machine Name]-[Plan ID]-[Unique ID]A-0001.tibx

[Machine Name]-[Plan ID]-[Unique ID]A-0002.tibx

You save backups to a NAS and the NAS has the recycle bin feature enabled.

After an archive is cleaned up according to retention rules, next backup fails.

Acronis Backup 11.7 had Simplified naming of backup files

Acronis Backup 12.5 currently does not support simplified naming.

Each backup plan creates one or more files in the backup location, depending on which backup scheme and which backup format are used. The following table lists the files that can be created per machine or mailbox.

Backup in Version 12 format fails with following error message:
error 0x40011: The specified file does not exist

Instructions on how to troubleshoot and resolve issues with corrupt backups

This article gives description of how backup archives are compatible with different versions of Acronis backup software

Backup or a different operation (replication, recovery, etc) fails with the following error:

The archive is invalid or its type is unsupported

You start a backup plan for the first time. After the first backup has not completed (for any reason), you want to delete this incomplete archive, but cannot find it under Backups. Or you notice, that space used in Acronis Cloud is larger than your backups occupy.

Deleting an entire backup:

  1. Connect to Management Console, and go to Backups tab, and then Locations

  1. You have a backup plan with replication. Backup format is set to Automatic selection in Backup options.
  2. The resulting archive is in Version 11 format as the original archive was created by older product version
  3. After the archive is deleted in original location, replication fails with the following error:

Cannot use this type of backup archive.

Once a password has been set for a backup archive, it can not be retrieved if lost or forgotten

  1. You create a backup using Version 12 format.
  2. An operation with archive (e.g. applying retention rules) fails with the error message

    Failed to lock the file

In what way full, differential and incremental backups differ from each other

This article applies only to archives in TIB format
If you have questions about the new tibx archives in Acronis True Image, see Acronis True Image 2020: new tibx backup format FAQ

Acronis True Image 2020 introduced a new backup format - .tibx, which is even more reliable and convenient. The .tibx format is used for disk backups created to internal drives, external drives, network storage.

One of the main changes in this new backup format is that the .tibx format saves full and differential backup versions as separate files, while incremental backup versions are automatically merged into their base full backups.
