Symptoms

  1. You try to back up SQL databases: either by selecting databases directly or using disk-level backup with enabled Microsoft SQL Server application backup
  2. Backup fails with the following error:

    Backup failed.
    Failed to get additional information about file 'D:\MSSQL\03\Database1.mdf'.

  3. SQL QUERY SELECT @@SERVERNAME as SERVERNAME returns old hostname or null

    To check this, execute the following SQL query while connected to an instance in question:

    SELECT @@SERVERNAME AS SERVERNAME;

    GO

Cause

 Acronis Backup fails at SQL statement SELECT @@SERVERNAME AS Instance_Path. Either computer name of the server had been changed at some point or SERVERNAME property is null.

Solution

To resolve the issue, update system metadata that is stored in sys.servers and reported by the system function @@SERVERNAME.

Execute the following SQL query while connected to an instance in question:

SELECT @@SERVERNAME AS SERVERNAME;

GO

1. If the @@SERVERNAME property is NULL, run the following T-SQL command:

For named instances:

EXEC sp_addserver '<computername>\<instancename>', local;

GO

For default(unnamed) instances:

EXEC sp_addserver '<computername>', local;

GO

where

<computername> - name of the machine where the instance is (or cluster network name if instance is in a cluster)

<instancename> - name of the current SQL instance(if named instance is used)

Restart the instance to apply changes.

2. If @@SERVERNAME property is not the same as the <computername>\<instancename>

where

<computername> - name of the machine where the instance is (or cluster network name if instance is in a cluster)

<instancename> - name of the current SQL instance(if named instance is used)

Then execute the following commands:

EXEC sp_dropserver <old_name>;

GO

EXEC sp_addserver <new_name>, 'local';

GO

where <old name> is the property returned by @@SERVERNAME

and <new name> is current <computername>\<instancename>

Restart the instance to apply changes.
