Hyper-V VMs on SMB3.0 shares backup is not supported

You configure an agentless backup of Hyper-V virtual machines with their VHD files situated on SMB 3.0 share. This configuration is supported by Windows Server 2012 VSS backup, see more in this Technet article: Protect Data on Remote SMB File Shares using VSS.

Backup with Acronis Backup Advanced Hyper-V fails with error:

Acronis Backup Advanced for Hyper-V does not support agentless backup of VMs located on SMB3.0 file shares.

This feature has been implemented in Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7. Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7 is available for all Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5 users free of charge, please download and install the latest build available in your account.

As a workaround, you can

  • Move VHD files to supported storage.
  • Install Agent for Windows inside the guest OS of each virtual machine situated on the SMB 3.0 share.
