41348: Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7/11.5: Requirements for Single-Pass Backup

Translate to:

A single-pass backup (aka application-aware backup) is a disk backup containing metadata of VSS-aware applications that are present on the disk. This metadata enables browsing and recovery of the backed-up application data without recovering the entire disk or volume.

Single-pass is available for machines running SQL Server, SharePoint Server and Active Directory. Single-pass is not available for Microsoft Exchange.

Having Acronis Backup, you will see following new part (on local management or centralized management console) when Create backup plan:

In order to run a single pass backup the installation of Acronis Backup Advanced needs to meet following requirements:

Environment

Agent for SQL can be installed in the following operating systems.

Agent for Active Directory can be installed in the following operating systems.

Supported Microsoft SQL Server versions.

Licenses required

Agent for SQL is installed as an add-on to Agent for Windows. To install Agent for Windows, use any license that enables installation of the agent in a server operating system. Users of Acronis Backup for Windows Server Essentials do not need an additional license. Users of Acronis Backup Advanced for VMware/Hyper-V/RHEV/Citrix XenServer/Oracle/Universal licenses need 1 license only to backup SQL Server/SharePoint/Active Directory installed on the virtual machines running on the host the license is used for.

Installation

To protect SQL Server or SharePoint Server with single-pass backup, Agent for SQL is required. To protect Active Directory with single-pass backup, Agent for Active Directory is required.

Agent for SQL and Agent for Active Directory can only be installed on a machine running SQL Server/SharePoint Server and Active Directory respectively. Remote installation of the agent is not possible.

Agent for SQL and Agent for Active Directory are installed as an add-on to Agent for Windows. In order to back up your virtual machines in single-pass mode, you need to install Agent for Windows and Agent for SQL/Agent for Active Directory on each virtual machine. Agentless backup (with Agent for Hyper-V or Virtual Appliance) does not provide single-pass functionality.

Install the agent in the same way as Agent for Windows. For detailed step-by-step instructions, refer to the following sections of the installation documentation:

Credentials for Microsoft SQL instances

During the installation, you are asked to specify the sysadmin credentials for each Microsoft SQL instance installed on the machine. These credentials are required to grant the sysadmin role to the agent service account.

You can skip entering the credentials and grant the agent the sysadmin role later by using SQL Server Management Studio or by running a T-SQL script. If you do not want to grant the sysadmin role to the agent, you will need to specify the sysadmin credentials in every backup plan.

For details, see Web Help: Permissions for SQL Server backup and recovery.

What happens when:
