Summary:

This article describes the usage of Windows-based permissions on Acronis Files Connect (formerly ExtremeZ-IP) shared volumes.

Description:

Acronis Files Connect adheres strictly to permissions as they are dictated or configured within the Windows kernel.

Acronis Files Connect does not maintain its own database of users and passwords. In other words, if a specific permissions structure is created on the Acronis Files Connect server, the same permissions that apply to PC workstations would also apply to Mac clients mounting that same volume via Acronis Files Connect.

The following information only applies to Acronis Files Connect 5.X or earlier. Adjust Mac Permissions is no longer included with Acronis Files Connect 6.0 or later.

If one is more familiar with the permissions configuration/setup as it appears on the Mac, Acronis Files Connect comes pre-packaged with some system DLLs that make the permissions configuration a bit easier.

In this case, the Acronis Files Connect administrator can right-click on a particular folder to share with EZ-IP, and select the "Adjust Macintosh Permissions..." option that appears on the pop-up menu. Here, the familiar Owner/Group/Everyone layout is presented. However, this tool translates those into NT-based security settings that also appear in the Security settings for the PC browsers.

The only notable difference is that guest logins are handled by enabling the 'Everyone' account on the Windows side. These are not handled through Windows' Guest account. We have recommended that the SYSTEM account be enabled for each volume that you're sharing with EZ-IP to give permissions to validate the node table, however this is not always necessary.
