38690: Acronis Backup 11.7/11.5: "Cannot back up this virtual machine because it is replicated"

The Virtual Machine is detected as replica if there is SourceArchive property in Virtual Machine's annotations. Delete the "SourceArchive" part to fix the issue

Symptoms

  1. You backed up a physical or a virtual machine;
  2. You recover or convert the backup file as a New Virtual Machine or you save the virtual machine as a set of files for VMware Workstation/Microsoft Virtual PC;
  3. You attempt to back up the new virtual machine but, at Select the data to back up, you cannot select the Virtual Machine and you see a warning message similar to:

    Cannot back up this virtual machine because it is replicated

Cause

This is in design of Acronis Backup software.

The Virtual Machine is detected as replica if there is SourceArchive property in virtual machine's annotations.

The Recover as a new virtual machine operation creates this property after recovery.

Solution

If you want to be able to back up the new virtual machine with Acronis Backup as a virtual one, please follow these steps:

In VMware vSphere console

  1. Power off the virtual machine;
  2. Click on its Summary tab;
  3. On the Annotations window, click Edit;
  4. Delete the last line in the Notes box: SourceArchive="GUID line";
  5. Click OK to save the changes.

In Hyper-V

  1. Power off the virtual machine.
  2. Navigate to Management -> Name -> Notes.
  3. Delete the last line in the Notes box: SourceArchive="GUID line";

After that, Acronis Backup will not consider the virtual machine as a replica any longer and you will be able to back it up.
