36325: Acronis Backup Advanced: Compatibility of Centralized Unmanaged Vaults Across Different Product Versions

Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7, Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5 (Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5) and Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 centralized unmanaged vault metadata and locks differ from those of Acronis Backup & Recovery 10

Symptoms

You use the following configuration:

  • Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7, Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5 or Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 Agents installed.
  • Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Agents installed.
  • Centralized unmanged vault is set up as a storage.
  • Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7, Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5, Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 and Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Agents back up to the same centralized unmanaged vault simultaneously.
  • Retention rules fail on the Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7/11.5 or Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 Agent with an error similar to:

    The backup cannot be found

Cause

There are two main differences in Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 and Acronis Backup & Recovery 11/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7:

  1. Metadata

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 uses ".meta" folder to store metadata. It is not aware of the newer metadata of Acronis Backup & Recovery 11/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7.
Acronis Backup & Recovery 11/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7 uses <ArchiveName>.xml to store specific archive's metadata. If it finds older metadata (created by Acronis Backup & Recovery 10) it will transform it to newer format.

  2. Locks

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 uses exclusive locks. If one agent locks a vault, no other agents will be able to access it.
Acronis Backup & Recovery 11/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7 uses shared locks. During read-only access (vault listing, slice listing, validation etc.) vault can be accessed by multiple agents.

So, if both Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 and Acronis Backup & Recovery 11/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7 Agents are backing up into the same vault, following behavior is to be expected:

  • After Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 finishes the backup, Acronis Backup & Recovery 11/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7 will convert metadata of Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 into newer format. To do that, Acronis Backup & Recovery 11/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7 will also temporary open archive, during that time Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 will be unable to open it.
  • Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 will exclusively lock the vault and its archives, so Acronis Backup & Recovery 11/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7 will fail to access the archive.

Solution

The following solutions are applicable:

  • Create separate vaults for Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 and Acronis Backup & Recovery 11/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7 Agents.
  • Create separate backup plans for Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 and Acronis Backup & Recovery 11/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.5/Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7 Agents and separare the time of backup, so that they do not intersect.
