Delete temporary VSS files (*.env) from the directory with the recovered transaction log files created during recovery of storage groups or databases to their original location or to a custom location

Symptoms

Recovery of Exchange storage groups or databases to their original location or to a custom location fails after a previous failure. The following errors occur: "A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) API error has occurred. Failed to notify Microsoft Exchange Server VSS Writer to prepare for recovery" and "Unknown Win32 error".

Cause

When recovering Exchange storage groups or databases to their original location or to a custom location, the Exchange Server Writers place temporary VSS-related files (*.env) inside the directory that has the recovered transaction log files. But if the recovery fails, the Exchange Server Writers do not always delete these files. Recovery of this data becomes impossible because the Writers try to continue the previously failed recovery.

Solution

You need to manually delete all VSS-related files (*.env) from the directory that has the recovered transaction log files. Then, run the recovery again.
