How to extract data from virtual machine backups in Acronis vmProtect 7
This article applies to:
- Acronis vmProtect 7
The File Recovery feature allows to extract several files or folders from a recovery point without restoring the entire virtual machine. All files and folders that you selected will be downloaded as a single .zip archive.
Files/folders recovery is available for the following file systems:
- FAT 16/32
(!) Recovery of files/folders from dynamic volumes is not supported.
Possible recovery destination is defined by the available options provided by the Internet browser which runs the vmProtect Management Console (the dialogue is the same as you see when trying to save some Internet page via File->Save As… option).
(!) When downloading large (several GB) files/folders via Internet Explorer browser make sure that you have enough free space on the system drive (where the Windows temporary folder is). If there is not enough space then as a workaround you can use some other Internet browser (Mozilla Firefox for example).
- To launch the File Recovery wizard, press File Recovery on the Actions or Recovery Points menu:
- Select the virtual machine from which you want to extract files and select the necessary recovery point. Press Next:
- In Step 2 you can browse the backup archive and select what files/folders you want to extract. In the browsing tree on the left side you can expand the volumes and folders and browse/select the contents of each volume/folder you want to recover on the right side.
You can also search for the necessary files/folders using the inbuilt Search feature.
Search is linear and shows first 50 matches. To see other matches, press More results.
(!) Search supports wildcard characters “*” and “?” as a file mask.
- After you selected the files and folders that you want to recover, press Download:
All of the selected files will be downloaded in one ZIP file.
As an alternative solution for getting the files from the backup you can use Run VM from Backup feature which also helps you getting access to files/folders inside the backup without recovering the whole archive - see Acronis vmProtect 7: Run VM from Backup.
