How to make Acronis PXE Server boot with PXELinux loader

This article applies to:

  • Acronis Snap Deploy 3

If Acronis components fail to boot via Acronis PXE Server, you can use an ISO image based on ISOLINUX.

  1. Install Acronis PXE Server and upload some component to Acronis PXE Server;
  2. Go to Start -> Run -> services.msc and stop Acronis PXE Service;
  3. Unzip the pxe_linux.zip archive and put the contents of PXELinux folder to \Program Files\Acronis\PXEServer\;
  4. Rename bootwiz.sys to bootwiz.sys.old at \Program Files\Acronis\PXEServer\;
  5. Rename bootwiz.pxe to bootwiz.sys at \Program Files\Acronis\PXEServer\;
  6. Locate the kernel.dat and ramdisk.dat files of the components on the machine where they are installed:

    Acronis Snap Deploy Agent

      \Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\OSDDemon\ramdisk.dat
      \Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\OSDDemon\kernel.dat

    Acronis Snap Deploy Master Image Creator

      \Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\ImageCreator\kernel.dat
      \Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\ImageCreator\ramdisk.dat

    Acronis Snap Deploy Standalone Utility

      \Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\OSDStandAlone\kernel.dat
      \Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\OSDStandAlone\ramdisk.dat
  7. Place the required kernel.dat and ramdisk.dat to the \Program Files\Acronis\PXEServer\ and \Program Files\Acronis\PXEServer\mic directories;

    For example, you can put Acronis Snap Deploy Agent components to \Program Files\Acronis\PXEServer\ and Acronis Snap Deploy Master Image Creator components to \Program Files\Acronis\PXEServer\mic. The components, which are at \Program Files\Acronis\PXEServer\ boot by default in 10 seconds. If you need to boot \Program Files\Acronis\PXEServer\mic you can press 2 and hit Enter during boot-up). The configuration file is \Program Files\Acronis\PXEServer\pxelinux.cfg\default.

  8. Go to Start -> Run -> services.msc and start Acronis PXE Service;

(!) If you need to change back to Acronis Loader-based boot-up, rename bootwiz.sys.old back to bootwiz.sys.

More information

We can also arrange a boot menu, adjust the path to the kernel.dat/ramdisk.dat, edit kernel parameters, make different machines boot with different options (see pxelinux.doc from http://syslinux.zytor.com) etc.
