Instructions on how to install Acronis License Server and manage licenses

Introduction

Please see Acronis License Server and Operating Systems Acronis License Server Supports.

It is recommended to always use the latest build. See Downloading the Latest Build of Acronis Software.

Solution

Installing Acronis License Server

  1. Run the product installation package;
  2. Click Install Acronis License Server;

You can install Acronis License Server on any machine in the network, where you are going to use the product. (Provided that the operating system is supported). Please note that the Acronis License Server is not designed to run on a notebook. See Acronis Backup & Recovery Advanced Workstation: It Is Not Recommended to Install Acronis License Server on a Notebook.

(!) Uninstallation of Acronis License Server does not remove files with the extension .lic from \Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\Agent. These are library files that let the product work with serial numbers.

Managing Licenses

  • Adding licenses through Acronis License Server Management Console:

    1. Run Acronis License Server Management Console;
    2. Click Manage licenses. Connect to the computer where Acronis License Server is installed;
    3. Click Add License on the sidebar;
    4. In the Add License window, type in the serial number or a path to the .txt or .eml file. Or browse to the file. A text file with all registered serial numbers can be downloaded by clicking on Get All Serials on top of the Registered Products page, or for each product separately;
    5. In the final window, click Proceed.
  • Adding licenses through command-line:

    (!) Make sure you did a complete installation (instead of typical) of Acronis License Server.

    1. Hit Start -> Run and type in cmd;
    2. In the command-line go to the folder where Acronis License Server is installed. By default, it is \Program Files\Acronis\LicenseServer;
    3. Enter the following command:

    LicenseServerCmdLine --import-file [servername] [filename]

    where:

    servername - name of the computer where Acronis License Server is installed
    filename - name of the file (*.txt or *.eml) with the serial numbers

    Example

    LicenseServerCmdLine --import-file testmachine C:\licenses.txt

    (!) Downgrading Acronis License Server requires manual deletion of the .lic files after uninstallation.

    (!) Neither Acronis products, nor Acronis License Server support Acronis Maintenance and Priority Support (AMPS) licenses.

  • (!) Acronis product requires one license for each machine that you intend to back up. Acronis Snap Deploy requires one license for each machine that you intend to deploy to or create an image of.

    (!) Acronis License Server of Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 does not accept trial license keys. See Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Trial Version.

    (!) Acronis License Server of Acronis Backup & Recovery does not accept licenses for standalone editions (see Acronis Backup & Recovery Editions). An attempt to add a standalone license will result in the failed to add license error message.

Freeing unused licenses

To free a license from Acronis License Server, do the following:

  1. Run Acronis License Server Management Console;
  2. Click Manage Licenses -> Manage Available Licenses;
  3. Select the license you want to free and click on the red cross on the toolbar.

In Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Build 11639 or higher you can use the following method to free a license:

  1. Run Acronis License Server Management Console;
  2. Click Manage Licenses -> Manage Used Licenses;
  3. Select the licence you want to free and press Revoke Licence:

(!) Please keep in mind the following conditions:

  • Per Acronis license agreement you can only free licenses that you did not use for backup. These are free licenses, or licenses used to install an Agent without backing up;
  • Acronis Snap Deploy licenses cannot be freed;
  • Trial licenses cannot be removed. Once you add full licenses to Acronis License Server, Agents will use them instead of the trial ones.

More information

(!) Acronis Backup & Recovery agent connects to Acronis License Server every time the agent service is started and then every 1–5 days, as specified by the agent configuration parameters. If the agent is unable to connect to the license server or does not find the appropriate license key for 1-60 days (as specified by the configuration parameters), it stops working until there has been a successful license check. By default, the agent tries to connect to the license server every day and keeps working without a license server or license for 30 days.

The service for Acronis License Server is Acronis Remote Agent.

Acronis True Image-specific notes

If your intention is to use Acronis True Image Workstation and Acronis True Image Enterprise Server (or Acronis True Image for Microsoft Windows Small Business Server) in the same network, then you will need to install one license server over another:

  • Install Acronis License Server of Acronis True Image Workstation;
  • On the same machine, install Acronis License Server of Acronis True Image Enterprise Server (or Acronis True Image for Microsoft Windows Small Business Server).

You can also first install Acronis License Server of Acronis True Image Enterprise Server (or Acronis True Image for Microsoft Windows Small Business Server) and then Acronis License Server of Acronis True Image Workstation over it.

(!) If you add an upgrade license, please make sure you add a license for the previous version as well. The previous version license should show as "1,000,000,000" in the Management Console. Otherwise Acronis True Image Echo local version or Acronis True Image Echo Agent will not install.

(!) To use two different versions of Acronis True Image in one network (e.g. Acronis True Image 9.1 Workstation and Acronis True Image Echo Workstation you will need to have two separate Acronis License Servers for each version on different machines.

(!) To use Acronis Backup & Recovery and Acronis True Image Echo with one Acronis License Server, you will need to install Acronis Backup & Recovery License Server over Acronis True Image Echo License Server. Make sure you have Acronis True Image Echo licenses imported in Acronis License Server before installing Acronis Backup & Recovery License Server over it. A clean installation of Acronis Backup & Recovery License Server will not work for Acronis True Image Echo. Please take a look at the following example:

    Sample scenario

  1. Install Acronis True Image Echo License Server;
  2. Import Acronis True Image Echo licenses to Acronis True Image Echo License Server;
  3. Install Acronis Backup & Recovery License Server over Acronis True Image Echo License Server;
  4. Import Acronis Backup & Recovery licenses to the installed Acronis Backup & Recovery License Server;
  5. Now you can use Acronis Backup & Recovery License Server both for Acronis Backup & Recovery and Acronis True Image Echo.

    Please note that if you add new Acronis True Image Echo licenses to Acronis Backup & Recovery License Server, these licenses will not work.

(!) Acronis License Server of Acronis True Image does not support Acronis Universal Restore Licenses.

(!) One trial license is valid for 5 machines. This is the only case when one license allows operations for multiple machines.

The information in Renewal date in used licenses shows the date when the Acronis Agent last connected to Acronis License Server to verify the license.
