Last update: 28-12-2010

This is an issue with the Virtual Machine Manager (virt-manager)

This article applies to:

  • Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Advanced Server - Virtual Edition

Symptoms

  1. You create a backup of a system partition of a virtual Windows machine in KVM environment;
  2. Then you restore the backup to the virtual machine in KVM environment with the Active Restore option of Acronis Backup & Recovery 10;
  3. When asked to reboot the machine during the restore, you commit the reboot;
  4. After the reboot, Active Restore fails with the following error message:

    Acronis Bootable Agent has failed to open backup archive

Cause

This is a KVM Virtual Machine Manager issue.

Solution

  1. As a workaround, do not use the Virtual Machine Manager (virt-manager) to launch the guest virtual machine - instead, call the virtual machine from the command line using QEMU:
    • To run the virtual machine with default settings, specify a path to the virtual machine image hard disk image with the following command:

      /usr/libexec/qemu-kvm –hda [image file] –hdb[image file] –hdc[image file]

    • To run the virtual machine with custom parameters, refer to QEMU user guide for the list of commands and their syntax.
  2. Use the third-party VNC client to display the guest virtual machine.
