16627: Acronis Backup & Recovery 10: Incorrect License Assignment on Linux Xen Virtual Machine in HVM Mode

Last update: 02-03-2011

HVM virtual machines are recognized as physical machines

This article applies to:

  • Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Advanced Server Virtual Edition

(!) This article applies only to Linux + Xen configurations. This issue does not occur on Citrix Xen.

Symptoms

  1. On a Linux + Xen system (e.g. Debian+Xen), you have virtual machines with Windows operating systems in HVM (Hardware Virtual Machine) mode;
  2. You install Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Agent for Windows inside virtual machine. First installation goes fine;
  3. When you attempt to install Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Agent in a second HVM virtual machine, the installation fails with the following error message:

    No free licenses available for this operating system

Cause

Issue in the product.

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 License Server recognizes HVM virtual machines as physical machines and assigns physical machine licenses to them. Since Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Advanced Server Virtual Edition allows installation only on one physical machine, license is taken by the first installation and installation of second Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Agent for Windows is not possible.

(!) Virtual machines in paravirtualization mode are correctly recognized as virtual machines and license assignment for them is correct.

Solution

As a workaround, use virtual machines in paravirtualization mode.

Acronis Development Team is working on fixing the issue. This article will be updated once the issue is fixed.
