The error message shows up only on the first boot after system restore

This article applies only to:

  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 R2

  1. Using Acronis software in Windows you back up a system partition with Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008;
  2. You then restore the backup with this operating system;
  3. When booting the restored operating system for the first time, Windows shows the following error message:

    Windows Error Recovery

If the backup of system partition with Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 was created in the operating system itself, then the system remembers its exact state when it was backed up. Since it was never shut down after being put into the backup archive, it reports that it was not properly shut down after the created image is restored.

This message appears with the prompt to choose an option for system startup. Just choose to Start Windows Normally. The error message will disappear.

More information

If you perform the backup from Acronis Bootable Media, then there will be no error message when the image is restored.
