15827: Acronis Backup & Recovery: Backing Up and Restoring Domain Controller

Create snapshots using Volume Shadow Copy

This article applies to:

  • Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5
  • Acronis Backup & Recovery 11
  • Acronis Backup & Recovery 10

Introduction

The safe way to back up an Active Directory server is to create a system backup with Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 with the option Create snapshots using VSS.

Restoration procedure may differ depending on availability of other domain controllers.

For detailed instructions on Active Directory backup and restore please refer to Acronis whitepaper: Active Directory backup and restore with Acronis Backup & Recovery 11

Solution

Backing up

To make the active directory database consistent in the backup, activate VSS support:

  • Select Backup options on the backup plan creation page to choose this option for a particular backup task or go to Options -> Default backup and recovery options to set default options;
  • In Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5 the Microsoft VSS Provider is preset. Under normal conditions there is no need to do any changes here. To check if the preset is used, follow the instructions for Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 in table below.
  • Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Acronis Backup & Recovery 11

    Go to Volume Shadow Copy Service and make sure the option Create snapshot using VSS is selected:

    Go to Volume Shadow Copy Service and select Use Volume Shadow Copy Service(VSS). In Snapshot provider select Software - System provider:

(!) In some cases Active Directory database and transaction logs may be stored on different volumes, so make sure both volumes are included in the backup.

If your domain has only one domain controller, it is recommended to create a backup at least daily to avoid significant information loss in case of crash.

Recovery

There are two possible scenarios for domain controller recovery:

  1. Restoring a single domain controller (no other domain controllers are available):
    • Make sure that the latest backup is used for restore;
    • Restore the domain controller from the backup using Acronis Bootable media;
    • Reboot the computer. Make sure the Active Directory service has started successfully.
  2. Restoring a domain controller if other domain controllers are available:
    • Restore the domain controller from the backup using Acronis Bootable media;
    • Reboot the computer. Make sure the Active Directory service has started successfully. Replicating of Active Directory records will be performed automatically.
