How to collect logs of SnapAPI drivers in Linux

The SnapAPI module is in charge of all I/O operations on the hard disk of Acronis software. When investigating issues with Acronis Backup Software Editions for Linux, Acronis Representative may require to get detailed information on how SnapAPI module interacts with disks in Linux system. Below is the description of how to collect such a report.

To collect SnapAPI logs in Linux, please do the following:

  1. Open terminal (console);
  2. Stop Acronis processes:

    # /etc/init.d/acronis_mms stop
    # /etc/init.d/acronis_agent stop

  3. Remove SnapAPI module from the kernel:

    # rmmod snapapi26

  4. Check SnapAPI version in the dkms tree:

    # dkms status

=> check for the "snapapi" entry similar to:

    snapapi26, 0.7.51, 2.6.31-gentoo-r6, x86_64: installed

(0.7.51 is the version of SnapAPI module in this example)

  5. Remove SnapAPI from the dkms tree using the respective version:

    # dkms remove -m snapapi26 -v [VERSION] --all

(where [VERSION] is the version of SnapAPI found out in step 4., e.g.: # dkms remove -m snapapi26 -v 0.7.51 --all)

    # rm -rf /usr/src/snapapi*

  6. Add tarball to the dkms tree:

    # dkms ldtarball /usr/lib/Acronis/kernel_modules/snapapi26-[VERSION]-all.tar.gz

  7. Edit the file /usr/src/snapapi26-[VERSION]/snapapi26.c and change #DEBUG 0 line to #DEBUG 1;
  8. Build and install SnapAPI module:

    # dkms build -m snapapi26 -v [VERSION] -k `uname -r` --arch `uname -m` --kernelsourcedir /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build
    # dkms install -m snapapi26 -v [VERSION] -k `uname -r` --arch `uname -m` --kernelsourcedir /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build

  9. Find and load appropriate module:
    # find /lib/modules/`uname -r`/ -name snapapi26.ko

    # insmod [Path_to_module]/snapapi26.ko

  10. Launch Acronis processes:

    # /etc/init.d/acronis_mms start
    # /etc/init.d/acronis_agent start

  11. Reproduce the issue and collect System Report as described in Acronis Backup & Recovery 10: Generating System Report.

Error:dkms build fails with "Error! The dkms.conf for this module includes a BUILD_EXCLUSIVE directive which does not match this kernel/arch. This indicates that it should not be built."

Reason: Module was compiled with wrong kernel or architecture.

Solution: Check if you used `quotes instead of '.

Error: dkms remove fails with "Error! No 'DEST_MODULE_LOCATION' directive specified."

# dkms.conf: Error! No 'DEST_MODULE_LOCATION' directive specified.
# dkms.conf: Error! No 'PACKAGE_NAME' directive specified.
# dkms.conf: Error! No 'PACKAGE_VERSION' directive specified.

# Error! Bad conf file.
# File: /var/lib/dkms/snapapi26/0.7.58/source/dkms.conf does not represent a valid dkms.conf file.

Reason: Snapapi sources were removed before dkms remove operation was performed.

Solution: use ldtarball for sources' installation (see p.6).

Error: insmod fails with "FATAL: Error inserting snapapi26 (/lib/modules/`uname -r`/extra/snapapi26.ko): Invalid module format" and dmesg contains error "snapapi26: disagrees about version of symbol struct_module"

Reason: /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build directory doesn't contain Modules.symvers file.

Solution: Launch kernel compilation in /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build:

# cd /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build

# make bzImage

or just copy appropriate file from kernel headers directory.
