Symptoms

  1. You are trying to back up or recover virtual machines on ESX/ESXi server using Acronis Agent for ESX/ESXi or Agent for VMware
  2. Operation fails with an error message similar to the following one:

    Cannot back up virtual machines of the ESX/ESXi server because the "vStorage APIs" feature is not installed on the server

Cause

VMware vStorage APIs are not installed on the ESX/ESXi server.

VMware vStorage APIs option is not available on the free version of VMware ESXi. Due to this, Acronis agent for ESXi cannot function in the free VMWare ESXi.

You can check if this feature is installed in Configuration -> Licensed Features on the ESX/ESXi server:

Solution

There are two possible solutions:

  1. You can install the regular Acronis Agent (for Windows or for Linux) into the guest operating system on virtual machines to back them up.
  2. Contact VMware to learn how to make VMware vStorage APIs available for your ESX/ESXi server.
