When Acronis Agent for Windows is installed, a folder Itzam is created on the following location:
- Windows XP/2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Acronis\Temp\
- Windows Vista/7/2008: C:\ProgramData\Acronis\Temp\
The purpose of this folder is to store a temporary database which contains information about files/folders tree during file-level operations. This database is stored in .dat~ format and ensures quick and proper access to the respective data.
During file-level backup, the Itzam folder is used to store temporary information about the backed up files and folders tree. After a successful backup, the temporary data is removed from the Itzam folder and is stored within the backup itself.
During file-level restore, backup archives are browsed for the data selected for the recovery. Based on this data, a respective files\folders tree is built in a temporary database represented by dat~ files in the Itzam folder. This database is then used by the restore process. When the operation is completed, temporary data in the Itzam folder is deleted.
In some cases, the Itzam folder may grow considerably in size. The size of the database depends on the number of the files (but not on their size). For example, a backup of a million files will approximate to a temporary 1 GB database file in the Itzam folder. To reduce the space taken by the temporary Itzam database, you can create smaller file backups or use disk/partition backups instead.
(!) There is no way to change the location of the Itzam folder.
