Description of how to create a virtual machine from a backup archive of a Linux system

Introduction

There is no direct way to convert a backup archive of a Linux operating system to a virtual machine. Please see the Solution section of this article.

Solution

1. Using Acronis backup software, create a backup archive of your Linux operating system;
2. Create a new virtual machine of the desired type;
3. Boot the virtual machine from an ISO containing Acronis Bootable Rescue Media. See also Standalone Version of Acronis Software;
4. Once booted from Acronis Bootable Media, restore the backup archive of your Linux operating system to the virtual machine.  If you want to have the LVM structure recreated, select the "Apply RAID/LVM" option. If you are using Acronis Backup & Recovery 11, select the Universal Restore option.
5. If you are using Acronis True Image 9.1, Acronis True Image Echo, or Acronis Backup & Recovery 10, proceed as described in Transferring Linux to Dissimilar Hardware to make the restored system bootable.
