Windows 7 has a System Reserved Partition, which is used for booting

This article applies to:

  • Acronis True Image Home 2012

Symptoms

  1. You have a backup of Windows XP;
  2. Using Acronis True Image Home 2012, you restore the backup over Windows 7 or to a machine where Windows 7 was installed;
  3. After the restore, the system is unbootable:

Cause

This is a known issue. Currently, restore of Windows XP to a system where Windows 7 was installed is not supported.

The issue is due to System Reserved Partition, which contains boot files and stays in the system after the restore. See also Acronis True Image Home and Windows 7 System Reserved Partition.

Solution

Currently, restore of Windows XP over Windows 7 is not supported.
