Make sure vStorage API is installed on the ESX server

This article applies to:

• Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Advanced Server - Virtual Edition

Symptoms

1. You are trying to back up virtual machines on ESX/ESXi server using Acronis Agent for ESX/ESXi;
2. Operation fails with an error message similar to the following one:

   Cannot back up virtual machines of the ESX/ESXi server because the "vStorage APIs" feature is not installed on the server

Cause

VMware vStorage APIs are not installed on the ESX/ESXi server.

You can check if this feature is installed in Configuration -> Licensed Features on the ESX/ESXi server:

(!) VMware vStorage APIs option is not available on the free version of VMware ESXi.

Solution

There are two possible solutions:

1. You can install the regular Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Agent on guest operating system on virtual machines to back them up;
2. Contact VMware to learn how to make VMware vStorage APIs available for your ESX/ESXi server.
