Disk/partition or a file container encrypted with TrueCrypt can only be backed up on file-level

This article applies to:

  • Acronis True Image Home 2011

Symptoms

TrueCrypt is an open-source disk encryption software that allows you to encrypt the entire partition or disk or to create an encrypted file container and mount it as a virtual disk.

  1. You encrypt a disk/partition with TrueCrypt or create an encrypted file container;
  2. You mount the encrypted item as a virtual disk in Windows;
  3. Virtual disk mounted by TrueCrypt is not visible in Acronis True Image Home 2011 in What to back up section in Disk and partition backup.

Cause

Compatibility issue.

Solution

As a workaround, you can back up files on a mounted item encrypted by TrueCrypt by choosing File backup in the main window of Acronis True Image Home 2011.

If you have encrypted file container, you can also back up this file container itself on file-level by choosing it in the What to back up section in File backup.
